Mantis is an AudioThing plugin that emulates the rare 1970s Carlsbro Mantis BBD echo/delay unit, capturing its warm, dark analog character with four taps, swell selectors, and a rotafaze modulation section.

Mantis

Purpose and Character

Mantis models the Carlsbro Mantis, an early commercial BBD delay from the 1970s. Bucket-brigade devices pass an analog signal through a chain of capacitors, and the plugin reproduces the resulting warm, dark sound and the gradual high-frequency loss and distortion on longer delay repeats. It uses eight TDA1022 chips, which were known for shorter, precise delays, making Mantis especially suited for organic slap-back echoes.

The original hardware had a fixed delay time, adjustable only by opening the unit and tuning trimmers, and was notably noisy when all taps and swells were active. The plugin preserves this vintage character in its default mode, offering an authentic recreation of the hardware’s limitations and sonic fingerprint, while also providing a modern mode for extended functionality.

Key Capabilities

Mantis includes an echo section with four taps and four swell selectors, allowing for complex rhythmic patterns and variable feedback textures. The rotafaze section adds modulation that can mimic the wow and flutter of a tape echo or transform the unit into a chorus-delay effect. This dual character makes it versatile for both classic echo and more experimental modulated sounds.

In vintage mode, the base delay time can be set between 0.512 ms and 51.2 ms, reflecting the original’s 512 stages per chip. This range is ideal for tight slap-back and subtle doubling. A modern mode extends the base delay up to 1 second, and this longer delay is syncable to the host DAW tempo, offering flexibility for contemporary production while keeping the analog-modeled core.

Workflow and Operation

Users can select between vintage and modern modes to suit their needs: vintage for a faithful recreation of the hardware’s fixed delay behavior and darker tonality, or modern for longer, tempo-synced delays. The interface includes a preset system with a randomizer, helping users discover new settings quickly. The window is resizable, improving usability across different screen resolutions and DAW layouts.

The four taps and swells can be adjusted independently, allowing for detailed control over delay patterns and feedback. The rotafaze section can be blended to add modulation depth, whether subtle tape-style instability or a pronounced chorus effect. This hands-on layout encourages experimentation, from simple slap-back to complex, evolving delays, all within a single plugin instance.

Practical Applications

Mantis excels at vintage-style slap-back echo on vocals, guitars, and drums, where its TDA1022-based character adds a warm, analog glue. The fixed delay range in vintage mode is perfect for rockabilly, country, and dub production, while the rotafaze modulation can create psychedelic or modulated delay textures. Modern mode’s tempo sync makes it suitable for rhythmic delays in electronic music.

The chorus-delay possibilities from the rotafaze section allow Mantis to double as a modulation effect, broadening its use beyond simple echo. Its dark, noisy nature can add character to sound design, film scoring, or any mix needing analog warmth. The preset randomizer aids in creative exploration, making Mantis a flexible tool for both subtle enhancement and bold, characterful effects.
