Purpose

Ocean Way Studios Deluxe is a UAD plug-in designed to add the acoustic character of two renowned recording spaces, Studio A and Studio B, to your mixes. It goes beyond a simple reverb effect by modeling the actual rooms, allowing you to place virtual microphones and sound sources inside these historic environments.

The plug-in aims to capture the dimension, space, and tone heard on many iconic recordings. It offers a way to bring a sense of realism and depth to vocals, drums, guitars, and other instruments, transforming dry recordings into performances that feel like they were tracked in a world-class studio.

Key Capabilities

The plug-in includes models of three reverb chambers designed by Bill Putnam Sr., offering a range of spaces from subtle ambience to long, epic tails. These chambers provide a natural alternative to typical algorithmic reverb effects, especially for adding depth to vocals, strings, and drums.

It also features re-mic setups that emulate the classic workflow of playing back tracks through UREI 813 monitors or Altec A-2 speakers and re-recording them with modeled microphones. This allows for an authentic ‘old-school’ re-miking effect, adding a unique coloration and sense of space.

Workflow

In your session, you can route individual tracks or buses through Ocean Way Studios Deluxe. The interface presents the control room and the studio floor, with controls for selecting the room (A or B), choosing microphone positions, and adjusting the levels of direct and ambience signals.

The plug-in also includes models of the analog consoles and outboard gear used in Ocean Way’s control room, such as Focusrite and Dalcon consoles, plus Fairchild, Teletronix LA-2A, 1176, and dbx 160 compressors. You can run your sources through these processors to add warmth and punch before or after the room sound.

Practical Applications

For mixing, Ocean Way Studios Deluxe is well-suited for adding realistic space to drum buses, giving them a sense of being in a large room. It also works on vocals, where the reverb chambers can provide a lush, natural depth that sits well in a mix without being overpowering.
